Nicholas Jones, Book Sculptor for the Pratt Fine Art Center, Seattle, WA

More from Nicholas Jones at his Master Class at the Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle. This was Jones' first trip over to teach in the states; his studio and showings are in Melbourne, Australia. It was really interesting to observe his class and the listen in on the lecture as his pieces almost demand a kind of justification for essentially destroying books to turn them into art. It is quite a phenomenon. He says in addition to looking for interesting looking books, he looks for a strong binding to ensure the piece can survive its transformation. His work can be viewed at bibliopath.org.

Book Sculptor Nicholas Jones, Pratt Fine Art Center, Seattle, WA

I really have a lot of respect for those that have a vision and need to create something new to achieve that vision. I always think back to a talk given by Sports Illustrated photographer Bill Frakes and his use of the strip camera to make compelling images. Nicholas Jones had to create his own medium to express his art, making these already interesting books into interesting sculptures. His work can be viewed here. More of this series to come later.
